Library Wines. What are they, and why should I buy them?

Is it worth it? Well, as with all wine tasting, that will be up to personal preference… We think it does seem to “up” the tasting experience to a whole new echelon of fragrance, taste, color, and these amazing changes add a sense of adventure and history all in one bottle.

1999 Beaux Freres just added to our cellar!

A quote from Mike Etzel, “A vintage hailed by wine pundits as a great one for Oregon Pinot Noir. It was a year of relatively high yields (even for us) and a spectacular growing year followed by very good harvest conditions.”

Last week, Jim Maresh paid me a visit with his 2010 signature Pinot Noir from his family’s old vine vineyard. As we talked in detail about the wines, I just couldn’t shake the thought of how similar his 2010 Arterberry Maresh Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir was to Thomas.

2008 Evening Land Oregon Pinot Noir

A Ponzi Wine Bar exclusive!! One of Burgundies most infamous winemakers, Dominique Lafon, created quite a stir when he branched out and agreed to consult for wines made from Oregon’s renowned Seven Springs Vineyard under the label, Evening Land Vineyards. In fact, ELV also approached Dominique to help out with projects in California and his response was something to the effect of, “I only have interest in making wine in one other place other than Burgundy; OREGON!” How cool is that!!?

This wine is something that Mr. Lafon refers to as, “Pour ma goule” or, loosely translated, “for my gullet” —In other words, what this star studded winemaker would drink at home with his family and share with friends; a superstar’s house pour, if you will. It is, in a word, incredible. Perfumed, floral aromatics, creamy texture and wonderful earthy nuances that only add to an amazing amount of complexity. This is the steal of the century!!
$25/Btl – $270/Case, includes a 10% case discount

OK, I’ve been waxing poetically about this wine since early winter when it really started to unfold, unwind and show its inner beauty. I told Luisa Ponzi a few weeks back that this wine encompasses everything that I love about Pinot Noir! Intense, pretty rose pedal nose, silky smooth tannins and spot on acidity that integrates perfectly with the creamy, sweet black fruit.

Calling All Sparkling Wine Lovers!*
2003 Soter Beacon Vineyards Beacon Hill Brut Rose
In my book, there’s no better way to celebrate than with a flute filled with pink bubbles. This is hands down one of the best! Tony Soter is at the top of my list when it comes to some of the most dynamic and character filled sparkling wines that come from the US. From the renowned Beacon Hill Vineyard comes this “grower” Champagne-esque bubbly that could easily stand up to the crystal bottle, jewel encrusted (and earth shatteringly priced) cousins across the pond. What you’ll notice first off is the tremendous nose of the most perfectly ripe strawberries imaginable mixed with raspberry and toasted brioche notes. Awesome stuff indeed!
