2007 Ponzi Pinot Noir Reserve

Patience is exactly what Luisa Ponzi exercised to create this beautifully perfumed, lovely wine. Sadly, what made the cut into the reserve bottle amounted to about half of what we normally produce. Once we rolled out the tight allocations to markets outside of Oregon, we were left with just about 100 cases to sell here at home. With just a couple of dozen cases left in stock to sell, time is of the essence to purchase this wine. Trust me, my fellow Pinot Noir aficionados, this is a wine that brings the wow factor now, but given 6-8 years in the bottle, it will be more like “OH, WOW!!”
Much has been said about the 2007 vintage. It is, to say the least, an often misunderstood vintage. It reminds me of 2001, both in style and how that year too was quickly overshadowed by a riper, more flamboyant year, 2002. Once those wines started to appear on the scene, those lonely 2001’s were practically forgotten about. Those of us who stashed a few bottles are now being richly rewarded with clean, bright, fresh fruit flavors and amazing balance to the wines. The bright notes of acid have held the wines together and simultaneously allowed the fruit sneak toward the front of the chorus line to add a few perfectly pitched chords.
I tell everyone that comes in to experience our current wine lineup and expresses hesitation to trying 2007 Pinots to close their eyes and let the wine speak to them. Hard I know, as we’re all susceptible to outside influences, but like anything in life, patience and an open mind often pay handsomely in the long run!
