All hail the Queen!

Two very small production lots from our friends at Evening Land Vineyards Oregon have hit our shelves! These two were “experimental” lots gone very, very right; never intended to be released until they blew everyone away. We’re lucky enough to experience these dynamic wines and pass along the opportunity to purchase them to our clients.

-The 2008 White Queen Chardonnay is a blend of two different blocks within the Seven Springs Vineyard (Evening Land’s estate vineyard just north of Salem). The nose is pure slate and citrus, with hints of white flowers and citrus blossom. Crisp, clean fruit is balanced by mouth-watering acidity. Phenomenal Chardonnay!

-2008 Red Queen Pinot Noir has a very dramatic red label (think old school Hong Kong Kung Fu movies..), but in the early stages of this wine’s life, it was originally conceived to remain within the Evening Land “chalk series” wines. No front label, just chalk writing stating the wine and vintage. All of the legal jargon was on the back label. (the White Queen remains unlabeled) What’s striking about this wine is how it manages to have an immense amount of concentration and yet nuances of earth & savory herbs share the spotlight. The challenge for any winemaker in a warm growing year such as 2008 is maintaining balance of acidity to bring the full package together. Like salt in food, acidity in wine is really what brings you back sip after sip, refreshing your palate. These two wines deliver that hard-to come-by combo in spades!
