Passion in a bottle!

Ever since I’d heard about this project between Dr. Ernie Loosen and Jay Sommers I’d been dying to taste it!
It did not disappoint.
Jay Sommers, of J. Christopher Wines, has always had a very Burgundian style. Jay has recently formed a partnership with legendary German winemaker, Ernie Loosen of Dr. Loosen fame. Erinie is primarily known for his Rieslings, but makes a myriad of striking wines. He had this to say about the partnership: “Jay doesn’t try to replicate Germany or Burgundy in the New World, but rather to bring an Old World sensibility to the creation of the wine, contributing to great structure and expression of the terroir. This collaboration will allow the growth that is needed to enable these elegant wines to be enjoyed around the world.”
The 2006 Appassionata was sourced from Abbey Ridge and Charlie’s vineyard in the Dundee Hills. What stands out is the elegance and balance of this wine. In the dead of winter I’m loving these aged Pinot that pack a punch but stay true to the varietal. There is definitely big fruit but it’s not overpowering. Ripe blueberries and earth are on the nose and the palate is silky with crushed raspberries and pie crust. At 100 cases, the 06 is their first collaboration release. The “passion” behind this bottle is evident, and after this tasting I’m even more eager to taste their cooler vintages. Grab this bottle while you can, and keep your eye out for their next releases. I know I will!
