When the Ponzi family planted Dolcetto grapes at the Aurora vineyard in 1992, the idea had been inspired by the beautiful wines made by their friends at Vietti Winery in Italy’s Piemonte region. Dolcetto remains a rare treat in Oregon… On that point, what’s with the name? For such a decidedly dry wine, the name seems to imply something entirely different. The translation, “little sweet one,” alludes to the hallmark low acidity that makes Dolcetto a favorite for early enjoyment. Aha!
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk more specifically about the 2009 Ponzi Dolcetto.
As I swirl a splash of this nearly black wine around in a proper Bordeaux glass, an unmistakable hint of star anise emerges amidst aromas of dark cherries and gentle spice. The palate is defined by ample ripe fruit thanks to September’s warm days and cool nights that nudged the grapes to perfect ripeness, maintaining flavor intensity while keeping acidity in check.
This Dolcetto really craves a luxurious dinner among loved ones. For food pairing, a beautiful steak or some zesty pasta dish would be worthy choices, but at a minimum I’d suggest a handful of Oregon hazelnuts or a hunk of baguette and olive oil. As far as picking your friends, how about some of your Pinot-exhausted pals who have the nerve to drink bigger reds… Just a thought. In my mind, Dolcetto without food and friends is just not right!
