So, back in 2008 this very nice couple from Amity, Don and Johanna Sandberg, came by with their new wine for the staff here at the Ponzi Wine Bar to try. A striking brown label with a wax cap, it looked like a serious wine from these new faces. They explained that they had planted a vineyard in the northern Eola Hills just outside of Amity and were making a small amount of wine from their fruit in addition to selling much of the fruit to well respected local winemakers. So I eagerly tried this wine and found that I quite liked it! The wine that I tasted was their 2006 Pelos-Sandberg Vineyard. I remember it being very concentrated with dark fruit and generous aromas. The 2008 is very close to my memory of that 2006 bottling. Aromas of cassis and cola lift from the glass and are followed by a wine with dense dark fruit, earth, spice and a lovely balance of acidity. The name of the winery comes from the fact that they produce a very small amount of their wine each year – just a mere 330 cases of this 2008 vintage! The Pelos-Sandberg vineyard is named for the two couples who own it and the Iota wine label. This is truly an example of that family run wine label- hard work and reverence for the craft and the land is at the heart of this wine. I’m pretty sure it shows in the glass- I know I’m smitten. We are excited to be one of the few retailers lucky enough to offer this wine to our customers. It is very limited so come see us or email us soon if you’d like some!
